East Africa
East Africa’s Kenya and Tanzania are the definition of classic safari country. Home to the vast Serengeti and Masai Mara as well as the teeming Ngorongoro Crater, East Africa has formed the backdrop for legendary safari expeditions since the days of Ernest Hemingway and Isak Dinesen. In northern Tanzania, the seemingly endless horizon of East Africa yields to Mount Kilimanjaro — the tallest mountain in Africa, at over 19,000 feet. Wildlife viewing throughout Kenya and Tanzania is reliably spectacular. The famed Big Five — lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and Cape buffalo — are sighted here on a regular basis, along with hundreds of other species, ranging from wildebeest and zebra to antelope and cheetah. Primate tracking lends another dimension to East Africa’s appeal, and up-close encounters with endangered mountain gorilla are yours to experience.

Southern Africa
Southern Africa, an area encompassing Zambia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Namibia and South Africa, offers a wide variety of scenic terrain, from the upland forests of Botswana to the incomparable Victoria Falls. It also enables you to experience an enticing mix of wildlife viewing and modern, world-class culture and cuisine in South Africa. On the wildlife side, Southern Africa is diverse, with the iconic big cats — lion, leopard and cheetah — always on the prowl. In Botswana, the lush Okavango Delta draws a profusion of hippo, giraffe, crocodile, rhino and baboon. The nation of South Africa offers first-rate culinary and cultural opportunities, ranging from tastings at award-winning wineries in the ruggedly beautiful Cape Winelands to visits to historical sites and the majestic Table Mountain in the country’s cosmopolitan “Mother City,” Cape Town. Namibia, in contrast, presents almost otherworldly landscapes, including the stunning Sossusvlei, with its red sand dunes rising from a pale salt pan, as well as the wind-blown Skeleton Coast, its sands dotted with rusting shipwrecks. Only here can you encounter the Himba people, nomads of the desert.
